Made with milk and served over ice, this iced matcha latte comes together in less than 5 minutes. The perfect summer drink for a refreshing caffeine boost!
If you know me well, you know I LOVE matcha.
It’s been almost 3 years now since I stumbled across it in the health food isle at my local supermarket, and I have never looked back.
Although I have used matcha for a while now as a coffee alternative, it wasn’t until about 6 months ago now, I discovered my love for iced matcha lattes.
This iced matcha latte is wonderfully refreshing, energising and delicious, and offers a more sustained energy boost, with less of the jittery feeling you would expect from coffee. When combined with almond milk, ice and sweetened with maple syrup, you’ll end up with a premium cup of zen.
Matcha vs Green Tea
Matcha is a type of green tea made up of whole green leaves that are typically grown in Japan. While regular green tea is prepared by soaking the leaves, matcha is made using the whole leaf, which is ground and pulverised into a vibrant, bright green powder.
Matcha is traditionally prepared in the Japanese way by using a bamboo spoon to measure the tea into a bowl and adding hot water. The tea is then blended with a bamboo whisk until smooth and a froth appears on the top.
Ingredients you’ll need
- Matcha powder – there are many different types of matcha available on the market, varying in degree of quality. Look for pure, ceremonial grade matcha sourced from Japan, that is vibrant green in colour. My favourite is NaturaleBio and you can find it here on Amazon.
- Almond milk – we use this for our iced matcha lattes, but feel free to use any other dairy free alternative.
- Maple syrup – we use maple to give this drink a subtle sweetness, but feel free to use, honey or any other sweetener you like.
- Ice
- Hot water
Why you’ll love this iced matcha latte
- It’s refreshing and light – the perfect summer drink!
- Quick to prepare. Everything comes together in less than 5 minutes!
- It’s high in caffeine, to give you that energy boost without the crash. One cup of matcha tea contains 70mg of caffeine, over double the amount found in green tea!
- A potent source of antioxidants including the powerful catechin EGCg.
- It’s vegan and dairy free!
How to make this recipe
To prepare the iced matcha tea latte, add the matcha powder and hot water to a cup or small bowl. Using a whisk, blend until smooth and the clumps are completely dissolved.
Then, in a separate glass, add the ice, milk and sweetener. Add in the matcha and stir until combined.
Serve and enjoy!
Tips/Variations
- High quality (ceremonial-grade) matcha is the key here to the best matcha latte! Look for matcha powder that is vibrant green in colour and sourced from Japan.
- Dissolve your matcha completely in warm water before serving to avoid any clumps. Do not miss this step!
- Feel free to make this recipe your own. I used almond milk and maple syrup here, but you are welcome to use any dairy free alternative and sweetener (optional) of your choice! Oat milk is another great alternative if you would like a creamy, more foamy latte.
- I would highly recommend investing in a whisk. I used a bamboo whisk which I found on Amazon, but an electric milk frother will also work well.
